Paddleboarding With Your Phone: How People Actually Lose Them
Almost never to water damage. Almost always to the bottom of the lake.
Spend an afternoon reading paddleboarding forums and you notice something: people arrive asking about waterproofing, and the experienced paddlers keep correcting them. Waterproofing was never the thing that got them.
The same story appears over and over, with different lakes. Someone had a waterproof pouch. The pouch worked perfectly. The phone is still gone.
One paddler described it exactly: he fell, the lanyard went over his head, and the phone is now resting at the bottom of a deep lake. The seal never failed. Nothing leaked. The pouch did its entire job and the phone was still unrecoverable — because a sealed pouch solves water, and nothing in that setup was solving gravity.
If you are figuring out how to carry a phone on a board, that distinction is the whole thing. So here is what actually goes wrong on a paddleboard specifically, and how to test your setup before it matters.
Why a Board Is Different From a Kayak
In a kayak you sit low, enclosed, and the failure event is a capsize — dramatic, obvious, and relatively rare once you have some skill.
On a paddleboard, falling is not the failure event. It is the activity. Beginners fall constantly, and even experienced paddlers go in when a wake catches them mid-stroke. Three things follow from that:
- You fall from standing height. Your phone is roughly five feet above the water, not at the waterline. It enters with momentum and keeps going.
- You are usually over deep water. Unlike a river bank or a shallow launch, most SUP falls happen where the bottom is well out of reach. There is no wading back to retrieve anything.
- Your hands are already busy. You are holding a paddle. Every one-handed phone operation on a board is a balance problem, which is why so many phones are dropped during the act of taking a photo rather than during a fall.
The IP68 Trap
A common story: a brand-new phone with an IP68 rating gets wet on a first SUP outing and is damaged anyway. The owner is baffled, because the specification said it could handle submersion.
The specification is real, but it is narrower than it sounds. IP ratings are tested in still, fresh water, at a defined depth, for a defined time, on a factory-fresh unit. A paddleboarding fall is none of those conditions:
- Salt water is corrosive in a way the test never simulates, and it keeps working on the internals after the phone dries.
- Impact from a fall drives water in at pressures above the static test depth.
- Age degrades the adhesive seals continuously. A two-year-old phone that has been dropped a few times has an IP rating on paper only.
- Screen repairs void it almost entirely. Once a device has been opened, the factory seal is gone unless it was resealed properly, and most aren't.
Treat your phone's rating as a bonus that might save you, never as the plan.
The Sink Test
This is the single most useful thing in this article, and it costs nothing.
Put your phone inside whatever you plan to use, seal it, and drop it in a sink or bathtub.
A great many pouches float beautifully when empty and sink immediately once a 200-gram phone is inside. People buy them, see them bob in the shop display or in an unboxing video, and reasonably assume they will float loaded. Many don't. You want to discover that in your bathroom, not over forty feet of water.
While you are there, check two more things: whether the seal still holds after being folded and unfolded a few dozen times, and whether you can open it one-handed. If it takes two hands, you will end up not using it, which is its own failure mode.
Getting Photos Without Losing the Phone
Most people bring a phone on the water for one reason: the view. And most people find that shooting through a pouch is disappointing enough that they take the phone out — which is the moment it goes in.
Two things help more than switching brands:
- Shoot through a single flat panel. Press the pouch material tight against the lens rather than letting it tent away from the phone. The haze and glare people blame on cheap plastic is usually an air gap.
- Stop trying to frame. Burst several shots at roughly the right angle and crop later. Composing a shot one-handed while keeping a board level is how phones end up in the water, and the crop looks the same either way.
Where the Lanyard Fails
A neck lanyard feels like the safe answer and contains a specific flaw: in a fall, it can come off over your head. That is not a rare freak event — it is the most commonly described way people lose a pouched phone on a board.
If you use a tether, attach it to your PFD or a fixed point on the board, not around your neck. A neck lanyard is also a genuine entanglement consideration in moving water, which is worth thinking about separately from the phone.
A Setup That Actually Covers the Failure Modes
No single product handles all of this. The combination that does:
- Water protection — a pouch, or a phone whose IP rating you have honestly assessed. This handles submersion.
- Flotation — so that when the phone goes in, it stays where you can see and reach it. This handles the failure the pouch cannot.
- Attachment — to your vest or board, never your neck. This handles separation.

- Move the tether off your neck. Thirty seconds of work against the most common way these are lost.
